Re BCPL: BCPL is a stripped-down CPL, which was intended as a generalization of
Algol 60. (See "The Main Features of CPL," *British Computer Journal* v.6, p.134
(1963).) The best BCPL reference I know of is *BCPL: the language and its compiler*
by Martin Richards and Colin Whitby-Strevens (Cambridge, 1979).
As for C--C is the next level up from PL360, and has similar purposes and design.
For general purpose programming, there ought to be something better.
