Is there no one out there (other than allegra!jpl) with a sense of humor?
<pulse quickens> How many more times will some bozo read the note about
fixed-points of cc's stderr, try it, and post an article saying `it doesn't work,'
or `it works, but it's boring,' or `it doesn't work with my compiler 
because the messages appear on stdout.'  <blood pressure rises, voice jumps
an octave>  Stop it!  I promise NEVER to say anything funny in the 
presence of dullards again!  <foam appears at corners of mouth, convulsive
