Well, the Wizard C compiler for the IBM PC prints a warning message:
Warning: Possibly incorrect assignment
with that line. If you want it to shut up, then use
if ((c = NL) != 0)
or whatever.
All C compilers are not created equal: some compilers check to see if what
you typed made any sense at all.
