CALL instruction and C

On page 20 of the January 1985 CACM, there is mention of replacing
the VAX CALL instruction, used by C for function entry (though in
this case used for a Modula-2 compiler), with a simpler sequence
of instructions "that do only what is necessary".  This resulted
in a performance improvement of 20%.

Does anyone know if this has been tried for C, and the practicality
of modifying the compiler to do such?
