What about signal handlers?

	volatile int hit = 0;
	int     foo();
	main()
	{
		signal(SIGINT, foo);
		while (!hit)
			;
		exit(0);
	}
	foo()
	{
		++hit;
	}
	/* end example */
Without volatile, you can't protect this program from being over-optimized.
