Zortech and extern inits (Re: Zortech is incompatible with TurboC)

Is this why my program that has the line:

char far *file_name= "FILE.VMF";

before main() won't compile with my Zortech C++ compiler.
Am I justified in being p*ssed off?  Or am I Missing Something?
(I've never been really comfortable with the near/far thing)
