malloc performance

I am using an Intel hypercube with Unix System V/386. 
Malloc(3C) seems to be really slow. Allocating a 64 kbyte
block takes 100 milliseconds. Malloc(3X) which is supposed
to be faster than (3C) takes 110 milliseconds.

Is there a cure for this problem?
