C graphics packages

Does anyone know or can recommend a c graphics package?

This is my first attempt at a full blown graphics program,

So I want something that I can get started with immediately,

but not have to upgrade from in several months.

One possible requirement is that shadowing is part of the

package.  Thanks. C Users Journal is full of advertisments,

so hopefully someone has travelled this road before me.
