Dynamic Storage Allocator

My apologies for the length of this posting and for the fact that
it is in lang.c rather than sources (which we don't carry because of
space problems). I have gotten a fair number of requests for a copy
of the allocator that I mentioned in a previous posting. After some
soul searching (we do sell software for *money* after all) I decided
to release it for public use. [Sarcastic comments like "You get money
for software like that!?" are directed to /dev/null.] I make no claims
that it is the best possible DSA. If I were writing it today there are
a number of things that I would do differently. That's as it may be.
Again apologies to everyone for the length of the posting.

REVISION HISTORY DATA
File name: getsp.c
Title: Storage allocation package
Version name: V7.22
Version date: plastic
Last cset: cs.0203
Last rev: 31
Last rev date: 90/10/31
DESCRIPTION
This is a dynamic storage allocation package. The entry points
are:
initsp Initialization entry
getsp Gets space from the allocator
retsp Returns space to the allocator
moresp Increases the size of an array
prgetsp Prints storage map
Initsp is called internally. Retsp has one argument -- the address of
a block of storage being returned; it should be cast as char *.
Getsp has two arguments, the length requested and an ID code. It returns
the address of the block as a character pointer. Moresp has four
arguments, the old pointer, the old length, the new length, and a
request ID; it returns a pointer to the increased block. Prgetsp
prints a storage map; it has one argument, a pointer to the output
file.
Associated with each block is a node; this node has five elements,
an address, storage left and right links, and avail left and right
links. Storage is divided into blocks requested from the system.
Each block has a dummy node at the high end for termination. The
blocks are doubly linked with null pointers for termination. The
avail lists are circularly double linked with no header node. The
blocks in use are singly linked, null terminated. They use the
avail left link (avail right for a block in use is null.)
Notes:
1. This is a best fit allocator
2. Global epoch_number must be set by the program using this
package. Set it in any way that's appropriate for your job.
3. Execution time of this package is about the same as malloc/free
on a SUN 3/50 OS 3.4; results may be entirely different on your
machine.
4. This is a modified version of the SMDS package; sundry utilities
have been stripped out.
5. The request number can be anything you like; you may wish to
modify the code to make it a pointer to a string.
6. Globals maxalloc and curalloc give you the maximum space allocated
and the current amount.
7. No claim is made that this code is beautiful, easy to read, or
easy to understand.
Note on allocation strategy:
The allocator distinguishes between big blocks (>1024 bytes) and small;
blocks. Blocks are allocated in units of 8 bytes. A list is maintained
for sizes up 128 units (1024 bytes) which heads a linked list of all
free blocks of that size. A subsidiary list is used when the regular
list of 'small' blocks is sparse. The package gets space from malloc
in 65K blocks for allocatable space; node space is also taken from
malloc.
