This is mass acknowledgement to all those who replied. I've done so on individual basis, but I'm sending this so as not to get responses from potential helpers. The problem was principally due to the fact that I was running SunOS 4.0.3c whereas at least 4.1's needed. I now run 4.1.1 and everything's in order. Julian
