Windows 3.0 Question

Micro-Soft Windows 3.0 has some very nice features which I
would like to take advantage of without getting into all the
windowing/graphics/message stuff.
Windows 3.0 runs programs in protect mode of the 286/386/486
class machine which means no 640K limit. And with a 386/486 there is
virtual memory and multi-tasking! However, because of the complexity
of the windowing/graphics/message stuff it would take several months
to master, and it is very difficult to port normal stuff to it.
I notice that when I run a DOS program under Windows and hit
Alt-Enter I get a full normal display with which my program may appear
as if running in plain old DOS.
I would like to get/write a Windows program which would act as a
shell for porting/writing DOS/UNIX (probably character based) applications
to Windows. This shell should hide the windowing/graphics/message
attributes of Windows while enabling me to utilize the multi-tasking/virtual
memory/protect mode attributes of Windows. Hopefully these Windows
programs would be able to appear as the DOS programs run without the
windowing facility (Alt-Enter mode).
Any suggestions or code would be appreciated.
My apologys for posting this to what is probably the wrong group.
This is the closest group which I have access to...
