Any academics interested in being nominated?

Rich Salz noted that the nominating committee didn't pick any full-time
"academics" for the slate of candidates for offices and directors of
Usenix.  Whether or not that is bad is, I suppose, a matter of
opinion;  as one of those "academics" I'd like to think we have
something to contribute, too.

I had contacted the nominating committee early on and indicated an interest
in running for one of the Director positions;  I didn't get selected.
The committee's statement in ";login:" describing why they picked
their candidates says:
    "The Board needs a range of talents, and it needs a good mix of
    experience and new ideas.  Candidates must be committed to Usenix,
    and must in addition have the skills needed to direct a rapidly
    growing organization."
Does my residency in the midwest constrain my qualifications?  Or does
the fact that I'm an academic faculty member mean I can't be committed
or have good ideas?  Maybe my involvement with Usenet or Purdue makes
me unfit for such a position :-)  Being the charitable type, I'll
assume that somebody overlooked my repeated expressions of interest,
and that is why my name didn't come up in the list of candidates --
accidents *do* happen from time to time.

However, to make life more interesting and help the nominating
committee make up for this oversight, I'm expressing my interest yet
again to run for a Director position.  The statement in ";login:" says
that at least five *members* in good standing must submit nominations to the
Executive Director by Feb 26.  If you think it would be worthwhile
to add my name to the list of qualified candidates, and you are a
member of Usenix, write (paper mail, not US mail) to:
	Mr. Peter H. Salus, Executive Director
	Usenix Association
	P.O. Box 2299
	Berkeley, CA 94710
Send him a piece of paper stating something to the effect of "I
nominate Eugene H. Spafford as a candidate to run in the 1988 elections
for the position of Director of the Usenix Association." Be sure to
sign your full name.

If at least 5 of you think I should be a candidate (note that I am *NOT*
soliciting anyone's vote...yet) and do this before the 26th, then thanks
in advance.

Let me also note that if anyone not currently nominated sincerely
wishes to be a candidate for a position as a Director or as an officer
and s/he sends me a note to that effect, I will be happy to submit a
nomination letter on his/her behalf.
