The next meeting of the Washington Area UNIX User's Group (WAUUG) will
be held Tuesday, May 14, at 6:30 pm at Tandem Computers, 12100 Sunrise
Valley Drive, in Reston, Virginia. (See below for directions.) The
topic will be "Creating Reliable UNIX Systems."
Anyone who has ever administered a UNIX system that serves multiple
users knows the problems that can be caused by an unreliable system:
lost work and business because of down time, data lost or corrupted
because of hardware or software problems, and high costs in time and
money to operate, administer, and maintain the system.
The ultimate solution to these problems would be a system that kept
running despite hardware or software errors, kept data error-free and
continually accessible, and could be easily repaired, upgraded, and
reconfigured by non-technical users without interrupting system
operations. And, of course, all while providing a standard UNIX
system environment and supporting standard UNIX applications.
The last year has seen a great deal of activity from vendors striving
to meet this goal by providing so-called fault tolerant UNIX systems.
This talk is a "how to" presentation on the techniques used to build
such systems, including the use of redundant processors, mirrored
disks, battery backup and uninterruptible power systems, and
"hot-swappable" components. It also covers software issues such as
enhancing the reliability of the UNIX operating system.
The talk describes how these features have been incorporated into
various UNIX systems, with a particular focus on the Integrity S2
system from Tandem Computers, Inc.
We invite anyone in government, industry, or academia to join us for
these sessions. As always, there is no charge and we do not require
you to be a member of WAUUG to attend. We would encourage all members
of the UNIX community to join WAUUG in order that we can continue to
bring you interesting sessions such as these.
