UUCP thru direct connection?

Hi. I'm trying to get UUCP to work over a hardwired connection
between a 3b1 and a VAX running 4.3BSD. I'm using the stock UUCP that
came with fixdisk 2.0. Here's what happens.
In the L-devices file, there's a line like this:
DIR tty000 0 9600
In L.sys, the script starts like this:
host Any tty000 9600 tty000 "" \r ogin: uucp
When I start the connection (uucico -x9), I get the following messages:
[lots of gotline's deleted]
SPEED 9600
LINE 9600
ndirect 1
direct tty000
direct 9600
fixline - speed= 13
enter us_sst, status is : 05
s.sysname : nothost
s.sysname : notyet
enter ub_sst, status is : 5
Rmtname: host
in ub_sst name=Rmtname: host
exit code 0
The log (LOGFILE) shows these lines:
host!uucp (2/7-16:15:05) (C,552,0) C.host (bldfl)
host!uucp (2/7-16:15:23) (C,552,0) TIMEOUT (DIRECT LINE WRITE tty000 10)
host!uucp (2/7-16:15:23) (C,552,0) FAILED (call to host)
The wire is set up, and works (pcomm can connect me directly at 9600
baud to the vax). Pins 6 and 8 are linked to 20 on the other side.
Can anyone shed some light on what might be going wrong here??
Thanks in advance!
j
