If you're going to do an async IP implementation for a machine, the right
link-layer protocol is probably Serial Line IP (SLIP), as defined in
RFC 1055.  It doesn't do dial-up without extensions (and there is presently
no standard for them), but it is quite widely implemented: DOS, Sun O/S,
other 4BSD Unixes, frontend boxes from cisco and Encore, SysV TCP/IP from
Spider Systems and Lachmann Associates, and so forth.
