C-news on a 3b1, patches, locations, etc...

Greetings,

I'm going to attempt the installation of c-news on my 3b1 (3.51a).  Since
I'm sure it's been done somewhere, I thought I'd ask.

Were any patches necessary to make it conform to the hardware or OS?
What is the current patch level? Where can official patches be obtained?
(I saved the original c-news distribution when it was posted.)
Can it be compiled with gcc without problems?
Anything particular I should be aware of? Pitfalls?

Example configuration files that run on a unix pc would be much appreciated,
as well as any other pointer or suggestion.

I'll post a summary if there is interest...
