That's not quite true. The maximum supported by the standard system board
as delivered from AT&T is indeed 4Mb; there is a hardware patch which, in
combination with a specially manufactured 4Mb board will allow up to 8Mb
to be used in a 3B2/400 (not, unfortunately, in a 3B2/310 as the RAM board
is a "full height" board which will not fit in the 310 case; it works fine
if you don't mind cutting a lump out of the case on the 310 :-) ).
This reply was, in fact, sent from a 3B2/400 running 6Mb. (One of the 4M
boards plus a standard AT&T 2M board).
You would also require a patched version of Unix (the kernel on the
distribution Unix doesn't support more than 4Mb).
All these things are available from Olivetti Systems and Networks UK;
if you would like details please email me; I'll post a reply if there's
enough interest.
The RAM cards from the 500/600/700/1000 series are, by the way, not
suitable for use in the 300/310/400 series at all.
