ST4096 in a 3B2/310

I recently inherited a Seagate ST4096.  After receiving much
positive response that it was a standard ST506 drive and could
be used in a 3B2, I tried it.  "idtools" had troubles:

GETPHYS: Could not inititalize disk 1
FORMHARD: Could not read physical info on disk 1
GETMFG Could not read backup map on disk 1
REINIT: Could not re-init controller with new information
FORMHARD: invalid disk info

The disk formats just fine on XT and AT machines.

Any idea what could be wrong here?  Is it just plain incompatible?
