Domain Addressing in UNIX SVR4.0 mail

The Rosen et al "Intro to UNIX SVR4" mentions domain addressing for
mail, but there seem to be sentences missing and the whole section is
less than clear.  Can anyone tell me the straight poop about the domain
addressing scheme in SVR4 mail?
