This is not bashing (pleez pardon the pun :-) Doug Gwyn's work, but I have
occasionally run into problems where directories with a large number of
files appear to be empty when using Doug's dirent code.  
Aside from that little hitch, Thad is right: it is a wonderful porting tool.
