finger doesn't (try to) find remote hosts

Although fingerd is there and the setup seems ok  finger(1)  
ignores any command lines in the form of   user at other-host.
There is no error message, just a reply that the local user
'user at other-host' doesn't exist.
I've installed the tahoe finger and it works perfectly
with Pyramids  fingerd.
Any clues?
