font caching in 'texsgi' dvi previewer

i recently pulled the 'texbin.tar' binaries from vgr.brl.mil, and
extracted the dvi previewer 'texsgi' for the 4d. the binary runs ok.
unfortunately, the previewer is extremely slow. it appears to be
reopening a font file every time the display font changes in
a sequential pass through the current page. for a document
with a lot of math and italics, it looks like it's doing hundreds
of fopens() per page.
the "-a" flag purportedly enables font caching, but produces no
speedup or extra memory usage (that i can detect). can anyone
tell me:
1) if the version i have (1.0) can do font caching, or, if not,
2) how to get an update of it that can?
thanks much in advance.
