Something that was recently pointed out to me was that you can improve the
performance of X applications on Iris consoles by setting your DISPLAY to be
"unix:0" rather than "localhost:0". Apparently, the latter causes some
interaction with network daemons, whereas the former goes straight to work,
so to speak.
