Stardent's AVS on SGI boxes

Before you spend too much time thinking about how to port AVS, you may want
to call Stardent (actually, the Stellar half of Stardent) and ask them how
they are progressing in their efforts to port it.  Last time I talked to the
guys at Stardent (last week), they had purchased an Iris and had a version of 
AVS running (albeit "like a pig") on it.  I have no details about which Iris 
it is but they were working on making run faster.  I think they ported Dore to 
the Iris which was relatively easy, and then ported AVS on top of Dore.  So you
have AVS --> Dore --> GL.  Not to mention X Windows.   No wonder its a bit slow.
