preventing core dumps

Brian Sturgill <brian at cs.utah.edu> wrote that he prevents IRIX from
making core dumps by making a symbolic link for /core to /dev/null.
I've been accomplishing the same by making a zero length core with
mode 0.  But I really wish the operating system designers would provide
an environment variable $NO_CORE or the like that could be used to
