Optical Drives on a 4d-iris

We are trying to hook up a Maxtor Tahiti optical read-write drive to a
personal iris and are having a lot of trouble just getting the machine
to recognize that the disk is even hooked up (hinv doesn't believe it
is there)  We can format it (maybe) using fx -x but it cant write to
the disk at all even to put the sgi disk header on.  Anyone out there
get one of these babies to work?  If so could you please send us your
experiences and how you got it to work.  Thanks a lot.
