read from socket returns errno = -1

We have compiled the BSD ftp sources under Irix 3.3.1. All works well for 
type ASCII files, but  a get with type BINARY always fails.

After some investigation we found out that the first read() on the input
socket always fails (returns -1) with errno also set to -1!

Does any body know what could cause this?
