sendmail.cf problem
Hi,
regarding the sendmail.cf problem consider the following real scenario:
- a large local net with no domain addressing
- about 100 SGI, SUN, DEC and IBM machines on this net
- plain /etc/hosts files (except on VM/MVS) with no domain
names (e.g. 129.247.35.6 hostname)
- some machines have interfaces to other nets
Practical experiences are:
- Non-SGI machines
Follow the instructions given in the documentation to get
the machine on the net and enjoy electronic mail including
forwarding of mail between all parties involved if the SGI
machines are configured as described below.
- SGI machines
Replace the sendmail.cf file supplied by an earlier version
(DZ5.6) and follow the instructions given in this script. Select
SGI as the domain name. Do not use a /etc/hosts file with domain
names, use the ordinary plain /etc/hosts file. Enjoy electronic
mail including forwarding of mail between all parties involved
exept with DEC VAX/VMS machines running the Wollongong WIN/TCP
software. Mail sent to these machines gets bounced ("Remote
protocol error").
It is a workaround for the configuration problem of SGI machines for the
scenario described above.
Much would be gained if SGI could come up with a configuration of their
current sendmail.cf file (IRIX 3.3.2) for a net with no domain addressing.
At least this would help those who had not a chance so far to switch to
domain addressing and it may be of interest to others, too.
Regards
