How to reset graphics

This may be a FAQ, so forgive my greenness ...

How does one reset the graphics interface from the keyboard?  As sometimes
happens in developing an application, it will bomb, leaving the screen
entirely filled with application windows that are inactive (do not respond
to any mouse input), which leaves no way to get back to the workspace using
the mouse.  Is there a keyboard command to reset the news server, or
some other more elegant way to get control back to the workspace than by
hitting the reset button?
