Argument passing on MIPS 1.31 C compiler

Does anybody know what the argument passing convention for the
MIPS C compiler (1.31) is. The assembly language programmers guide
for Silicon Graphics' IRIS-4D machines goes part way to providing the
answer, but does not appear to give the general rule.
