start-up screen

Being new to both UNIX and the SGI's I somehow managed to mess up the 
initial configuration of the machine following login.  The machine is off
doing something and the system, workspace, tools, etc icons and buttons do
not appear in the upper left corner.  I do get the console icon and can work
from there.  Where is the file that specifies the initial conditions and what
might I have done to loose things???
