Is this bug known to be related to ls -l problem

A few days ago I registered a bug ( some body beat me to the first complaint)
about ls -l dumping core if the user is not explicitly in the passwd file.

Now we have the following problem.

Users are given access using th + operator of NIS.  They are able to log in
and their NeWS starts up just fine.  The problem is that all their
wsh windows die instantly.  

This is a REALLY anoying bug and a posted fix would be great.  In fact 
It is hard for me to resist flaming SGI for this bug.  But I will control
my self and go have a shower.
