Problems with NFS/rfs

Dear Netters:
We have a bunch of 4D's ethernetted together, and about 2 weeks ago our
main file server started generating thousands of
rfs_read: attempt to read from non-file
errors (both grcond and unix log them to SYSLOG). In fact, enough messages
are generated to disable logins (I guess because the system is busy handling
them). I can stop the messages by un-exporting the file systems; they
start up again when I export. Sometimes, however, the machine decides to
let me export things for a while if I have waited several hours.
Has anyone seen anything like this before? I have reloaded/upgraded OS,
done a mkfs on the file systems and nothing seems to help.
System Info: 4D/220GTX, IRIX 3.3.2 (was 3.2), disks are 1.2 GB SMD.
