simultaneous read/write using sproc

Has anyone tried to (blocking) read/write to a fildes (such as 
a serial port, socket, etc..) using sproc(2) instead of using select(2) 
to poll ?  I haven't tried it yet but hopefully somebody has done it 
before to tell me if this is feasible.
