TCP/IP SubNet Masks?

The documentation seems to imply that a subnet mask can be any number of
bits in length. Is this really true? We would like to be able to
allocate ten bits for sub net numbers and 6 bits for host numbers. The
machine we are most interested in doing this on are Suns, VAXen, and IBM
RTs. If anyone has had experience in doing this I would appreciate
hearing from them. Thanks in advance.
