monochrome X11 on color Sparcstation?

We have some Sparcstations here with color cgthree0 and one with color
cgsix0 displays.  Is there anyway to convince Xsun to use these displays
in monochrome (1 bit) mode instead of color (8 bit) mode for higher
performance?
