Streams and slip

We are running slip under 4.0.1 on a 3/280. lately we have see the message
from slip:

slip0: slip_output can't allocb

We have recompliled with larger buffers but that only seems to delay the
problem. Has this problem come up before? Any ideas on the cause or
suggestions for a solution. Since we don't have sources it is hard to
track it down ourselves. Thanks for any help you can give.
