Xlogics 720 SCSI, Wren V and Sun 4/280

Does anybody out there have the following combination:

   Xylogics 720 SCSI controller
   CDC Wren V drive
   Sun 4/280, OS 4.01

We are having a heck of time getting this combination to work.  We can
make a new file system via newfs, check the raw device via fsck, but when
we try and check the cooked device via fsck we get a message which says 

         "CANNOT READ BLOCK 16, WRONG MAGIC NUMBER"

If we try and use the disk the system panics after writing only few files
to the disk.  Thanks.
