Sun is considering removing support for the SunView 3.X screen
compatibility options from SunView/SunOS 4.1. SunView 3.X screen
compatibility is an option given to the users of SunView/SunOS 4.0 which
allows them to select between the SunView 3.X style user interface and
SunView 4.0 style user interface. The changes will not affect application
programmers. Application programmers will still get to choose between
SunView 3.X function calls, which will produce a SunView 3.X style user
interface, and SunView 4.0 function calls, which produce a SunView 4.0
style user interface. However, when the USER runs the application, he
will no longer be able to select the style of interface; he will have to
be content with whatever the application programmer selected in the
implementation.
The proposed changes are as follows:
1) Removal of support for stacking menus
2) Removal of support for the old style text menu
3) Removal of support for the old style tty menu
4) Removal of support for the old style frame menu
5) Removal of support for old style alerts
The 4.X SunView enhancements which supplant these items are discussed in
the document "SunOS 4.0 Change Notes", part number 800-1731-10, pp. 35 -
41.
Customers who would have problems (adverse impacts on software products)
with these changes are encouraged to send email (by June 28, 1989) to:
