Probs booting diskless clients

We have a new sun 3/280 server serving 9 clients, 4 of them diskless.  The
diskless clients have had a lot of trouble booting, and now they won't
boot at all.  The message has been either:

	whoami RPC call failed with status 10 

or

	RPC call failed (status 10)
	bad dialog with bootparam server (error 0xA)

If we run the bootparamd in the debug mode on the server, it says:

	bp_getclntent failed

So:  what is trying to run bp_getclntent, and why is it failing?  Why
won't the diskless clients boot?
