Fun with XDR record streams

XDR_HELP!!  With the functions xdrmem_create and xdrstdio_create, the x_op
parameter specifies whether data on the XDR stream is to be ENCODEd or
DECODEd.  Now check out the function xdrrec_create.  How the heck do the
XDR i/o routines (e.g., xdr_long) know when data on a record stream is to
be DECODEd or ENCODEd, read or written??
