PC-NFS: rcmd: too many open files

I recently figured out what's really going on when "rsh" from a PC-NFS
client says:
Permission denied
rcmd: too many open files
The "too many open files" is a red herring: the "Permission denied" is the
real error message. This user did not have his PC's hostname in his
.rhosts file, and I had recently removed everything from hosts.equiv on
the server, which is why the message suddenly started appearing when it
used to work a week before.
Sun Customer Assistance was able to identify this as a bug in the way that
NFS errors are mapped into PC-DOS errors. They were very responsive and
helpful, but I had been looking in here for an answer for a while before I
called Sun, without success. So, I thought I'd post it myself to help the
next innocent victim.
