4.1 mail

<My 4.1 mail refuses to read from stdin when you try to read you mail.  It
<takes a long time start up, and if you leave it alone for about 30
<seconds, it behaves as if you typed q.  I copied a 4.0.3 mail from another
<system and it appears to work.  Any suggestions?

Under 4.1 the mail directory needs to be mode 1777 for mail to work.
Otherwise you get symptoms like you described.
