floating point output abysmally slow

While trying to speed up a program which is output-bound, I found that
floating-point output using stdio (or equally, the C++ iostream library)
is approximately 9 times slower on a Sparcstation 1 than on a DECstation
3100.  Similarly poor performance on a Sun-3/60 suggests that Sun's stdio
library could use drastic improvement in this area.  Has anyone dealt with
this problem successfully?
