Expanding # of processes

We have a Sun4/75 (SPARCstation 2) with 16MB running SunOS 4.1.1.  And we
also have one NCD X terminal attached to it.  What we found was that if we
fork too many processes and then issue a command, the system says 'Vfork
failed'. The number of process when this happens is only a little more
than 70.  Is there any way to expand the number of processes?
