   Wouldn't it be nice if Sun provided some already compiled up
   versions of some of the more popular things like X, GNU-Emacs,
   other things from the Net that might be deemed useful...  Sun could
   really do their user community a service with this.

Sun User Group has taken on that task.  They'll soon release the SUG
CD, as discussed on alt.sys.sun and comp.org.sug between the date you
posted your comment to comp.sys.sun and the date it appeared.
