Software installation opinions needed

There's a paper in the upcoming LISA conference, called "depot: A
Framework for Sharing Software Installation Across Organizational and
UNIX Platform Boundaries".  It describes how we (NIST) addressed many
of the problems discussed in this thread.

If you want a copy of the paper (and can't wait for LISA), you can
ping the author (klm at cme.nist.gov), although I believe it still has
not completed its internal review prior to public release.  If you are
real nice or promise to critique it or something like that, he'll
probably give out a "beta" copy.
