tar problem ?

	I'm running AIX 2.2.1 on an RT.

	Can anyone tell me why the following doesn't work ?

	tar -c -f - dir1 dir2 dir3 | (cd /newdir; tar -x -f -)

	The idea is make a copy of dir1 dir2 dir3 while retaining
	dates of creation, ownership, permissions, etc.

	I'm getting directories and files created in /newdir 
	but some of them are using the same inodes :-(  
	(i.e. the stuff in /newdir is useless).  Thanks.
