3002 uses a *LOT* of memory

Here in the backwoods I've just received 3002 (and that after a lot of
hassle). Previously we've had the one that came preinstalled when they
arrived in August 1990, I think that was 3.1 with no patches. We run
nfs but no X.
After applying my patch and rebooting pstat -s (with just me on) shows
around 5600 blocks ie > 22MB of virtual memory is in use! Plus, no one
but root can log in, or rather they can but the connection gets closed
immediately.
Am I doing something stupid? Does this sound familiar to anyone?
When this happened I tried reinstalling AIX from tape. It installs the
base bit fine but when I tried to install the rest from smit startup
it happily listed what was on there and let me choose it but when I
tried to load it it complained it was not in backup format. Again,
am I being stupid?
Flame>>> I installed SunOS 4.1.1 onto an originally diskless IPC with
a third party disk I had put on myself with no problems - and I'm
running the same operating system as the rest of the world. And tech
support talk to me and even solve my problems. So now I'm writing a
letter to our Computer Unit who are doing their procurement this year.
Still, it's only a computer.
Many thanks to anyone who can help.
