sendmail not using nameserver!

I don't know whether you read my previous posting and thanks for your help
if you responded, but some testing today has offered new clues!  Since
sendmail always complained that every host I tried to send to, I wondered
if maybe it wasn't using the nameserver.  I put uunet.uu.net into the
/etc/hosts file and tried the following:

AIX instfe 1.2> mail -v @uunet.uu.net:ericw at janis
Subject: Test
Did you get this? @uunet.uu.net:ericw at janis
.
Cc: 
@uunet.uu.net:ericw at janis... Connecting to relay1.UU.NET (tcp)...
@uunet.uu.net:ericw at janis... Connecting to uunet.UU.NET (tcp)...

So!  I can get mail out if I go through uunet.uu.net, but this isn't too
satisfactory since we have a very nice nameserver that all the other machines
here use to send mail directly to anyone on the internet.  Does anyone have
an idea as how I can convince PS/2 AIX 1.2 sendmail to use the nameserver
when trying to send internet mail?
